Gotham is a gorgeous font. It is the essence of East Coast style. From the engraved cornerstone at the World Trade Center in NYC to Obama's campaign signs to the logo branding on all the USA Network TV channels, corporate America is in love with this font. And I was ready to jump on that band wagon.
But unfortunately, that Hoefler & Frere-Jones band wagon left me in the mud when I choked on the price tag: $300!
Avenir is no cheaper, mind you. The complete family will run you over €350. But I guess I'm lucky in that regards, a friend of my already has Avenir installed on his computer.

While searching for alternatives, I ran across this article: http://imjustcreative.com/alternatives-to-gotham-typeface/2010/07/01/. To my untrained eye, Avenir could easily be the fraternal twin brother of Gotham.
